Ali R. Tabassian, M.D., Ph.D.

DrTabassian.jpgDr. Tabassian received a Bachelor of Science and a Ph.D. with honors from George Washington University. He earned his M.D. with honors at the Medical College of Virginia. After an internship, Dr. Tabassian returned to the Medical College of Virginia for residency in Ophthalmology. A fellowship in Vitreo-Retinal diseases at the prestigious University of Iowa followed. Dr. Tabassian returned to Richmond in 1996 as Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Medical College of Virginia. Since establishing the Retina Institute of Virginia, Dr. Tabassian has continued to be active in teaching at MCV.

He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists and an active member of the Virginia Society of Ophthalmology and the Vitreous Society. Dr. Tabassian's areas of expertise include retinal detachments, retinal vascular diseases, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.

Juan A. Astruc, Jr., M.D.

DrAstruc.jpgDr. Juan A. Astruc, Jr. is a native of Richmond, Virginia, where he lives with his wife and four children. He received his Bachelor of Science in Business from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He earned his Medical Degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He then completed an internship in Internal Medicine from the Medical College of Virginia, where he continued his residency training in Ophthalmology. A fellowship in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery and Macular Diseases with J. Donald M. Gass, M.D. at Vanderbilt University followed.

Dr. Astruc is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists and an active member of the Virginia Society of Ophthalmology. Dr. Astruc also served as a member of the Medical Advisory Board for the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles from 2006 to 2016. Dr. Astruc's areas of expertise include retinal detachments, penetrating ocular trauma, macular surgery, retinal vascular diseases, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration.

J. Stewart O'Keefe, M.D.

Drokeefe.jpgDr. O'Keefe received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from The College of William and Mary with
honors. He earned his M.D. with honors at The University of Virginia Medical School. After
internship, Dr. O'Keefe went to the Emory Eye Care Center in Atlanta, Georgia for residency in
Ophthalmology. He continued at Emory completing a prestigious two-year fellowship in
Vitreoretinal Surgery and Diseases.

He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and an active member of the Virginia Society of Ophthalmology. Dr. O'Keefe's areas of expertise include retinal detachments, macular surgery and retinal vascular diseases, retinopathy of prematurity, ocular tumors and diabetic retinopathy.

Dr. O'Keefe is a native of Richmond, Virginia, where he lives with his wife and two children.

Bryan James Schwent, M.D.

DrSchwent.jpgDr. Schwent received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Truman State University with honors. He earned his Medical Degree with honors from Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He then completed his internship and residency in Ophthalmology at Emory University School of Medicine. During his last year of residency, he was selected to serve as Chief Resident. He remained at the Emory Eye Center to complete a two-year fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery and Diseases. Upon completing his training, Dr. Schwent joined the faculty at Emory as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Schwent is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. His areas of expertise include retinal detachments, retinal vascular diseases, macular degeneration, macular surgery, diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity, and uveitis.

Dr. Schwent lives in Midlothian, VA with his wife and children.

Thomas L. Jenkins, M.D.

Dr. JenkinsDr. Jenkins attended the College of Charleston in South Carolina where he received a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology with honors. He earned his M.D. with honors from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where he received multiple awards for clinical performance. He then completed an internship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, considered to be one of the top training programs in the country. After residency, he remained at Wills Eye Hospital to complete a prestigious two-year fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery.

Dr. Jenkins is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.  His areas of expertise include surgical diseases of the macula and retina, scleral fixation of intraocular lenses, retinal vascular diseases, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration.

Dr. Jenkins is a Richmond, Virginia native, where he currently lives with his wife.
